The Ultimate WoW Guide Reviewed

While others have tried and failed miserably, Dave Farell, creator of the Ultimate WoW Guide has accomplished an incredible achievement and created a massive WoW resource that's not just about leveling. It's gold, macro, class and profession guides as well. I've counted the guides last night (2008-03-19) and they add up to a total of 51 wow guides that beats Joana, Brian Kopp and Valkor in both quantity and quality. This is without even mentioning the exploit guides yet...

What would you do with powerful content like this? Using this the right way could turn you into a very solid and wealthy WoW player with the ability to level any character to 70 in about 6 – 7 days. The big question is.. Would you share it with your friends or keep it all to yourself? =)

If you continue to read my Ultimate WoW Guide review, you will find out about these guides and what they offer. This is what my review will cover.

* A review of the 1 – 60 leveling guide (with photos)
* Review of the 60 – 70 outland guide (with photos)
* Review of the Level 70 gold farming spots in the guide (with photos)
* A close look at the gold guide (with screenshots)
* Even closer look at the profession guides (with pictures)

* A detailed report on the class guides (with screenshots)

* An analysis of the class macro guides (with screenshots)

* A sneak peak on the exploits.

OK, lets go down to business!

First, lets talk a little about what the Ultimate WoW guide contains. As I said above, you will have about 50 guides at your disposal. The guides are written in an easy to understand language with lots of map screenshots to make it more easier for you to understand.

It doesn't matter if you play as horde or alliance because there are guides for both sides.

Here is a screenshot from the main page that you will see when you first log in.

As you can see on the picture you will be recommended to download a “beginner gamers guide” that has been created for the Ultimate WoW guide. I honestly think that this guide is pretty useful if you are starting out. It offers a lot more info than you will find in the official world of warcraft manual. If you have played a while you might learn something new, but it's mostly basic stuff like how guilds work and how you can use different chat commands.

Next you see a link that recommends you to download and listen to an audio ebook. I listen to the audio and it's a woman who reads up the whole guide. I thought that it was pretty cool to listen to. The female voice is clear and distinct and feels good to listen to. Listen to these audio files if you hate to read.. It's easier to listen than read right? =).

I went on and clicked on the 1 – 60 horde leveling guide link which I want to talk a little about next..

This is the screen you will see if you want to use the 1 – 60 leveling guide. The guide is divided into segments depending on which level you are currently on. Dave have used this layout so you can easily begin using the guide no matter which level you are currently on. As you can see on the screenshot above, there are starting guides (1 – 20) for both horde and alliance. Every race has its own starting guide and you will soon see how it looks like.

*side note: There is an option to get the guide in printer friendly format if you wish to print it out. I think it's easier to read the guide and it's more easier to follow if you have it printed out. Just click on the link that says “printer friendly”. (The screenshots are taken from this mode).

Now lets look on how the Draenei starting guide looks like..

Throughout the guide you will have two quest descriptions. The first is what you see above. It's the quest order of the guide. For example: When you first start out as a draenei you should first pick up the quest “You Survived!”. Then when you have finished that quest you should start a new quest called “Volatile Mutations”. After you have completed “Volatile Mutations” you should start a new quest called “Replenishing the Healing Crystals” and so on.

There is also a map to help you find where the quest is located. The location of each quest is marked with a letter on the map.

The second description is a little more detailed and I have added a screenshot of it below.

A little minus from my side is that the quests are sorted from A to Z, not from lvl 1 to lvl 20. In this case you will need to search for the quest name and not on the level you are currently on. A little minus there.

The layout style you see above is the same throughout the guide. Dave Farrell has been consistent here and I think it's a good thing. I would still change the A to Z quest ranking to a lvl 1 to lvl 70 ranking.

The descriptions are very accurate and detailed and if you want to know more about a particular quest, just click on the quest link and you will be taken to wowhead.com with more detailed info about that quest.

As a side note: I like wowhead a little more than allakhazam and thottbot because their site looks nicer. But then it's just me =).

Now, lets move on over to the 60 to 70 leveling guide.

I've added a screenshot of the 60 – 62 section of the 60 – 70 leveling guide which starts at the Dark Portal in Outland.

You can see that it's pretty much the same as the starting guide. The example above is from the 60 – 70 horde guide. The alliance faction has a guide just like this one, but with different quests of course. (If the screenshot is a little small for you?, click on it to get a larger view.)

A good thing when following a guide like this one is that you become very organized. Being organized means that you always know what to do next. You will always be two or three steps ahead and this builds tempo. You will become extremely efficient by having your road already mapped out. Levels will fly by you in a raging tempo. Trust me on this one because I have tested this and it works supremely well.

Next in my Ultimate WoW Guide review I will show you some of the level 70 farming spots in outland. Pretty cool stuff if you ask me.. =)

Personally I get tremendous value from this section. If I want to earn a couple of 100s of gold quick?, then I use these recommended farming sites. Now, I'm not going to reveal all of the farming spots, only a few. I get about 130 – 200 gold per hour when I'm farming at these places. Here is the screenshot..

If you look at the screenshot you can see which NPCs to kill and which items to farm. There are details on 28 NPCs you can farm in this section.

This is great content if you ask me. I didn't know about many of these locations and NPCs. I can honestly say that I'm never short of gold anymore. This is because I now know where to farm it and which techniques to use to make more. Speaking of which, there is more info in this guide on how to make lots of gold in WoW.

You see.. this guide has a full gold guide as well.

If you didn't knew it earlier.. The only way to make serious cash in world of warcraft is through the auction house (AH). Sure you can make a couple of hundred gold on questing and gold farming but the big money lies in the auction house. That means buying low and selling high, or to a price that will make you a profit.

There are certain mental techniques you can use to get people to buy your stuff before someone else.

For example.. Did you know that there are certain prices that makes people more likely to buy. A brilliant copywriter named Gary Halbert made test on this and he found out that certain numbers made people more likely to buy. For example: 19,95 ' 39,95 ' 69,95 ' 99,95 and 199 is some of the best prices that makes people more likely to buy.

Anyway you get lots of tactics in this gold guide on how to make the really big money. We are talking 1000s of gold here.

I've added a screenshot of the guide down below.

If you look on the screenshot above you can see that there are quite a few techniques and guides on how to make gold. I think that the “auction house strategies” chapter will give you the most value.

Another thing you can make money from is through professions, and that's what I want to talk about next.

The ultimate wow guide has 13 profession guides and the range from 1 to 375. I couldn't find a fishing guide here and I think Dave are working on that. Anyway, I have taken a screenshot from one of these guides. It's the Blacksmithing Guide. I must say that the profession guides is a bit boring to read. They doesn't have any pictures or descriptive text.

Take a look at the screenshot to know what I'm talking about..

As you can see it's very plain. I checked the guides (not all) and much is estimated. For example: If you look at the screenshot above. From lvl 1 to 25 Dave has estimated that it will take 50 Rough Sharpening Stones to gain 25 levels. The Rough Sharpening Stone recipe goes yellow at 15. When the recipe was orange you got a skillpoint for ever Rough Sharpening Stone you created, but now you might get one for every 3 or 4.

I guess it's fine to estimate but there are other recipes that are cheap as well and will give you a guaranteed skillpoint. When you climb up the levels it gets more expensive and it could cost you an arm and a leg if you estimate like this.

However, it's better to use a guide like the one above than using no at all. It's a little dull looking but it gets the job done in the end. (Hurray!)

Lets now move over to the class guides.

There are 9 classes in world of warcraft and you will have your own Class Guide in this guide.

I took a screenshot from the Paladin Class Guide because I love to play a pally. They can do so much =). I know the pally class pretty well and I must say that this class guide is very accurate and professional looking. There are 3 different talent builds along with good gear you should try to get when you reach 70, but also good gear you should be on the lookout on the way to 70. Dave Farrell has added the specific quests you should seek out to complete to get the good gear.

Here is the screenshot..

I find it good to have a guide of a class that you don't know so much about. I haven't used so many rogues in my days and it's awesome to have a professional talent guide along with a good gear guide for my rogue. Now I know which quests to do to get good gear when leveling up.

I think this section is a very big plus. (+++++)

Another thing that is very closely connected to the class guides is the class macro guides. I've added yet another screenshot of the Warrior Macro Guide so you can get an idea of how it looks like.

The screenshot shows you info on how to set up macros for a warrior so you can change weapons faster than a lightning bolt. The info here can be a bit hard to understand for a beginner and I would advice you to visit worldofwarcraft.com and read more about macros.

I find the macros very useful and I use several of them on my characters today. It's also good to have a bunch of macros pre-built for a class you normally wouldn't play very much. It's just plug and play.

It's now time for the final section of the Ultimate WoW Guide review... The exploits guide! =)

I think that this part of the guide is something you can do when you have some spare time and wish to explore the vast landscape of world of warcraft.

Some of the exploits here are old and doesn't work but some do. Here are some of the cool exploits and tricks:

* Wall-climbing videos.
* A skill-up technique for warriors that allows you to attack one mob and raise your weapon skill very fast.
* A PvP trick that gives you 100 rage instantly.
* How to buy recipes that you normally can't.
* How to solo high end instances for epic drops.
* Unlimited hearth stones.

This is just a few examples o the exploits that I found and I think they are pretty awesome.

Conclusion

I think this guide has a lot to offer both when it comes to leveling and when it comes to earning gold. When I use this guide I can level up a new character in about 7 days of playing time (I get faster and faster). I also end up with about 3000 to 4000 gold in my pocket which is never bad. Many of the strategies you will learn in this ebook are very advanced and the leveling guide kicks ass.

You will become a better World of Warcraft player by using this guide. I'm convinced on that point.. It worked for me so why wouldn't it work for you?

My only minuses are the profession guides that could need a rewrite with more photos and more detail. The second minus is that the quest descriptions are sorted from A to Z and not lvl 1 to 70.'

I love the class and macro guides. They are very useful when starting a new class that you don't know so much about.

Then as a last bonus is the exploits that will give you a tiny edge before everyone else. Use them responsible =).

I rate this guide a 4,5 out of 5 which is pretty darn good..
